CLAUDE JONES: Peculiar Biologies
9th September - 7th October, 2009
“My work focuses on the creation of peculiar biologies– hybrid and mutant creatures that reflect our complex interconnectedness with other living species. In particular, I am interested in exploring the contradictions in our multifaceted relationship with animals – in domesticity, agriculture, art, research and in medical science. The works in this exhibition depict imaginary hybrid creatures. Each creature is constructed of diverse elements referencing transgenics, the surgical cutting and inserting of parts, the experimental mixing of the animal, plant, and human – a kind of Frankenstein mingling of species.
(un)COVERINGS: ART, WRITING AND THE BOOK
PETER E CHARUK
Curated by Anna Gibbs and Caroline Wales
These works exemplify the variety of artists' uses of the codex form of the book to subvert the dominant genres of the novel and narrative, to construct narratives, games and jokes in images, to create animated proto-cinematic flipbooks, to explore the nature of repetition and seriality and the particular kinds of interactivity enabled by the book, to comment on the book itself as a cultural object, and to use it as a tool for thought and a material archive of it in the form of notebooks and sketchbooks. This show also exposes the artist-assisted escape of text from under the cover of the book as it migrates into images and onto walls or finds form in stories spoken aloud and words whispered directly into your ear…
